Living With a Learning Disability as an Adult

You have to deal with a number of issues if you have a learning disability, even if that disability was diagnosed in the childhood. The issues will be different and many more in adulthood than they were in your childhood years. Hence you will have to find new ways to cope with these challenges and issues posed by the learning disability.

With advancing age you will want to be a part of many social events like marriage, parenthood etc. And your learning disability will require you to handle these challenges in way that will allow you to be a productive part of the society and even be successful in the career you choose to follow.

Learning disabilities can have an impact on your thinking process, speech, listening power, reading ability, and writing ability. These learning disabilities will also have an impact on your reasoning and computing abilities. These means your ability to handle mathematical data may be impaired, and mathematical data is something that we use even in our daily lives to quite an extent. Therefore if there is a learning disability then we need to come up with ways to compensate and adjust as responsible adults.

There will be times when you will be frustrated and angry because others will not know how to handle your learning disability. The people talking or interacting with you might become impatient when they find that you are not able to comprehend and compute what they are saying. While in college you may find that you are not able to finish assignments and all your courses in time and this may cause frustration.

You need to find the balance between having a disability and changing your goals. You do need to know your limitations but at the same time there is no reason for you not to live a full and happy life. You should be able to enjoy relationships and being a parent, even with your learning disability.

Being a parent with learning disability can be tough and stressing. To reduce the stress of being a disability parent, you can do a number of things like take care of your time and manage it properly.

One helpful technique is to keep a calendar in a prominent place such as the kitchen or other room you frequent. You can note the times and dates that your children have to be certain places. This will give you a strong visual aid and help keep you from missing appointments and pick-up times.

The next tip for taking control of your life despite the learning disability is to keep your home organized so that when you need to find something it will be there in its fixed permanent location inside your home. And in this way you can avoid getting frustrated and angry because of your inability to locate things that have been misplaced.

Even though it can be difficult, strive to remain calm and patient, even when things aren't going your way. All people have bad days at times, so try not to blame every problem on your learning disability.

The use of biofeedback devices in Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy

Biofeedback devices measure a range of physiological variables including brain waves (Electroencephalography), muscle tension (Electromyography) and the electrical conductivity of the skin (galvanic skin response). All of these variables indicate continuums of emotional arousal. It is precisely these measurements that are used in lie-detector machines as they pick up the most subtle of physiological changes - many outside of conscious awareness. Many biofeedback devices exist and create a feedback loop for the user. Having the ability to see these readings, the user can learn to gain control over these physiological measurements by relaxing and seeing (or hearing) measurements rise and fall in response to meditation, self-hypnosis or breathing techniques.

In my private hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and NLP practice, I sometimes elect to use a Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) meter with clients. Galvanic Skin Response (also called electro-dermal response) is a measure of the electrical conductivity of the skin. If I am using a GSR meter within a session, I first connect my clients to device by placing electrodes on two fingers on the same hand. After several minutes, I take an initial baseline reading. During the session, the meter readings will rise and fall in line with the emotional arousal of the client. In essence, the greater the presence of water and salt on the skin, the more conductive of electricity the skin is. Changes in sweat production in the fingertips can occur for a number of physiological reasons; however, there is a correlation between electrical conductivity of the skin and emotional arousal. A higher GSR reading tends to reflect an increase in emotional arousal (whether that emotion be anger, stress, anxiety, and startle response).

Whilst therapists develop great sensory acuity though many client hours experience, the GSR meter provides another tool to provide a clue that something is happening for the client. It is of particular use in hypnoanalysis or regression when the client has accessed an emotional memory and is experiencing it vividly. Whilst abreactions are easily spotted by a therapist, the GSR meter provides an early sign of emotional arousal that may assist the exploration of the traumatic material. The GSR reading can also be useful for testing the change in the client's emotional arousal regarding phobias before and after the change work has been completed. The client's responsiveness to hypnotic induction is clearly demonstrated by a falling reading on the GSR meter. The device can, therefore, be used to indicate when the client is deep enough into trance to make suggestions more direct. I recently conducted a hypnotherapy session and during a section about learning new skills, I mentioned being back at school to access and utilise that regressed learning state that children possess (this is a popular approach popularised by the late renowned hypnotherapist Milton Erickson). The meter rose rapidly at this moment although there were no visible changes to skin tone, breathing rate etc. At the end of the session, my client explained that she had enjoyed the experience but mention of the school had reminded her of a time when she had been bullied. Whilst not a significant event, it was nevertheless a demonstration of the usefulness of GSR meters within a therapeutic setting.

Biofeedback devices will never replace the skill of a therapist nor the importance of watching and listening but they can be a useful adjunct to the therapists toolkit in certain situations.

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

NLP is a multi-dimensional methodology of communication, personal development and change. It seeks to understand the dynamics and interaction of the human nervous system and mind (neuro), language and communication (linguistic) and the organisation of human thought processes and patterns (programming) to effect positive and beneficial personal change.

If we were to think of the brain as a computer running a large number of 'programs' (the brain's 'software'), NLP teaches the client to reorganise or re-pattern the way that these 'programs' are run to enable dramatic transformations and changes to take place.

The Historical Development of NLP

The development of NLP began in the 1970s when Dr. Richard Bandler & John Grinder set out to understand and model what it was that made the most effective communicators so effective.

Bandler and Grinder believed that therapists were among the most effective communicators as they were able to initiate amazing transformations within their clients apparently just through talking with them. With this in mind, they set about modelling some of the leading therapists of the day, including Fritz Perls (the founder of Gestalt therapy), Virginia Satir (a renowned family therapist) and Milton H. Erickson M.D. (the world's leading hypnotherapist at that time). In modelling the verbal and non-verbal patterns used by these most elegant and persuasive communicators and proponents of personal change, they identified a variety of patterns that could be used to replicate the astounding results they had observed in the work of these pre-eminent therapists. NLP started out, therefore, as a field to study and model the structure of excellence in communication. This approach to understanding the structure of subjective experience, language and thought processes became known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

The field of NLP has continued to develop and be refined over the last thirty years and is now widely used in many areas of change work and personal development. It is not simply a technology to fix problems but seeks to go far beyond that to facilitate 'generative' change i.e. to empower the client to make improvements in all areas of their life.

What can I expect from seeing a therapist or life coach trained in NLP?

A session with an NLP trained therapist or life coach will typically be quite conversational with the practitioner using a range of language skills and strong observational and listening skills to elicit precisely how the client is experiencing 'reality' and using transformational and hypnotic communication to help the client change their subjective experience of 'reality' to gain new perspectives and become aware of the wide range of possibilities and opportunities that are available.

In contrast to many approaches to therapy, NLP works on an assumption that old experiences or traumas do not have to be relived in order for change to occur. NLP believes that all experience is subjective and that we respond to our internal representation of events, not to the events themselves. Experience has a structure inside our minds so if we change the structure, we change the experience.

As human beings, we are driven by a large number of automatic 'patterns' or 'programs' that are largely outside of conscious awareness. An NLP practitioner will concentrate less on 'why' the client is experiencing the issues or problems they are experiencing and more on 'how' the client uses certain 'patterns' and 'programs' to hold the issue, problem or limiting belief in place.

So, the practitioner will focus on understanding the context of the problem (when/where does it occur... when doesn't it occur?), the process the client goes through in order to produce the problem (what triggers the problem off... when is everything OK?), and the structure of the problem within the clients mind (does the client criticise themselves inside in a harsh tonality first, get a feeling in the stomach and then perhaps make pictures in their mind of things going wrong?).

In much the same way that Bandler & Grinder modelled excellence, an NLP practitioner will seek to understand the structure of their problem and work with the client to interrupt or spoil the limiting pattern and replace it with something more useful. Also, the client will undoubtedly have experienced many positive and resourceful states that can be accessed and utilised to overwrite the previously held limiting behaviour or belief 'programs'.

Human beings are the most amazing learning machines so if we can easily learn limiting behaviours then we can equally easily learn more useful behaviours and access more resourceful emotional states. A good example of this is a phobia. People can develop debilitating phobias from a single bad experience. It is this capacity to learn rapidly that is utilised by an NLP practitioner to eliminate the phobia just as quickly as it was originally acquired.

There are a large number of powerful techniques that NLP practitioners use to change the structure of how the client subjectively experiences reality and to facilitate permanent and positive changes.

Hypnosis will often also play a part during sessions with an NLP practitioner. Hypnosis is a powerful way to ensure that learnings are integrated into the subconscious more quickly and permanently than perhaps could be achieved without hypnosis. Even if a formal trance induction does not take place during your sessions, you can be sure that a skilled NLP practitioner is communicating at many different levels to help facilitate change.

What can NLP be used for?

NLP is successfully used to overcome phobias, addictions and depression, reduce anxiety and stress, eliminate limiting beliefs, gain greater control over emotional states, improve communication, enhance performance, achieve goals, and perhaps most importantly, find ways to increase the amount of happiness and joy people have in their lives.

Anxiety Attack Therapies

Are you having trembling, sweating, contraction of the chest?. When a person feels extreme fear one can safely consider that the person is suffering from symptoms of anxiety attack. However, the same person can have different signs and symptoms during an anxiety attack and most of the symptoms do not last more than half an hour.

The panic attack symptoms are nothing new and have affected as many as 20 million people in the USA, which works out to be one in every 14 people! The panic attack symptoms could include nausea, hypertension, obsessive-compulsive behaviors and other symptoms.

Getting treatment for panic attacks can be as simple as having a great diet, relaxation or a regular exercise. Eating properly and nourishing your body the nutrients it needs is an important step to equipping your organs and blood with the enzymes it needs to perform its job. Taking the time to enjoy life is one of the verybest anxiety disorder therapies for you.

Using Therapy And Medication To Attack Your Anxiety Attack Symptoms

There are different kinds of therapies available that can help you to control panic attack symptoms. There is a treatment called behavioral therapy that can be used to help anxiety disorder sufferers to relieve their symptoms. This therapy involves altering the way the sufferer perceives or thinks certain situations. By changing the way you perceive certain situations, those particular situations can become less intimidating and help with the tendency to inflate a situation to an unmanageable level. This anxiety disorder treatment is usually used for patients who suffer from certain phobias like social phobias or social anxiety disorder.

The aim of the treatment is to expose the sufferer to the things that trigger their condition. Hopefully they will realize that the consequences for these kind ofsituations are not nearly as bad as they thought.. The behavioral aspect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a must for people desperately looking for help for anxiety. By teaching the persons breathing exercises, relaxation techniques and the desensitization process, the therapist will help the sufferer alter his behavior slowly. People who need help for anxiety due to paranoia will step-by-step be taken through several stimulated experiences, where step-by-step the fear of people will be overcome.

One sure-fire way of getting in control of the anxiety symptoms is to take medication which may help you to break the vicious cycle. Todays anxiety medication is very effective in treating anxiety attacks. Your physician will tell you which medication you should take. Remember that it normally takes several weeks for the medication to have any effect. There is a number of different and effective medications are available. These different groups of drugs are "Azapirones", "Benzodiazepines", "Tricyclic Antidepressants", "Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors", "Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors".

The most often prescribed drug type to panic attack suffers is the benzodiazepine drug type where "Alprazolam" is the most prescribed of that type of drug. However, the benzodiazepine is a medication drug class that claims it solves anxiety symptoms in 70-80 percent of the patients. One problem with this is that the pamphlet that is included together with the drug informs that benzodiazepine can CAUSE anxiety!

Beta blockers are the best drug class to control anxiety attack symptoms and are normaly prescribed to prevent rapid heartbeat, symptoms related to shaking and trembling. The beta blockers also have less side effects than any other forms of medication, but they can cause insomnia and other sleep-related issues like nightmares. In the case of anxiety panic attacks, as the beta blockers does not actually cure the panic attack, most health care professionals do not prescribe beta blockers.

Medication And Anxiety Attack Therapy Working Together

therapy can often be used together for treatment of anxiety attacks. When the patient changes the way they perceive certain things, the behavioral therapy is successful. If medication is prescribed, it can take weeks to fully work. Medications as an anxiety attack treatment help regulate certain chemicals that the brain needs. By combining the two treatments, the sufferer can effectively battle their anxiety attacks.

How To Deal with Fear Attacks

A great many of us are familiar with fear and stress. These are normal situations in our lives and once we pass these troubles we tend to forget about them. Unfortunately there are people who live with fear and panic their whole lives. For these people panic does not mean a reaction to a normal uncomfortable situation, instead it means wondering when you will be terrified and helpless next. This is what having panic disorder can do to you.

Fear disorder is a very bad condition. The sentiments arising from this disorder are irrational to the situation. They have a tendency to seem in response to stressful gatherings in our lives. These may be gatherings like getting married, having your first child, even switching your job. Fear disorders generally start from panic attacks. These can sometimes arise during teenage years to early adulthood.

Fear attacks and their symptoms are connected with panic disorder. The symptoms can be from a fast beating heart, dizziness, nausea, paralyzing terror, smothering sensations to a panic of death. Sometimes panic disorder can lead to various phobias, substance abuse, medical complications and in severe cases, suicide.

The sufferer of panic disorder will live in constant and persistent panic of future panic attacks reoccurring. The effect of living with panic disorder is that you tend to restrict your life in certain areas so that you avoid triggering another panic attack. While we may believe that this behavior is strange, for the panic disorder individual this sort of lifestyle tends to be a nightmare.

The effects of panic disorder ranges from mild to being socially impaired to the more severe and weakening condition of agoraphobia, where you are housebound for a big part of your life as you wish to avoid another panic attack. With panic disorder, phobias are usually the result. Here phobias do not start with regards to specific objects or gatherings in one's life. Instead going through a panic attack in different places or situations will cause the phobia to start itself.

People who may have had four or more repeated panic attacks and who think that they might have another similar bout of pure mind numbing panic should have a visit with a psychiatrist who is an specialist in anxiety and panic disorders. This is very important because the longer your condition is left untreated, the more the quality of your life will degrade.

Many therapists concur that the best ways to treat panic disorder is with cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy and in other cases a combination of these two along with prescription medication. These are all good methods to control your panic disorder, however these will remain only means and not possible cures if you do not take the initiative in seeing a trained psychiatrist as well as finishing the course of treatment.

Diagnosing schizophrenia

Diagnosing schizophrenia is quite a complicated procedure involving a lot of spent time observing the person's actions and way of thinking. That person may start developing different symptoms like anxiety, confusion and starting to be suspicious on other people, mostly those that don't agree with their view of things around; they may even refuse to admit the fact that they need help. Doctors have to put a correct diagnose so they will look for both positive and negative symptoms; strange thinking, hallucinations and delusions are positive signs and apathy, emotional flatness, inability to concentrate, wanting to avoid people or to be protected are negative symptoms.

Strange thinking is also a major symptom in schizophrenic people. Their ideas might seem a bit strange to other people making little sense to them. Logical thinking may also present a problem to them. Loneliness and isolation may install because of the inability of the patient to properly talk.

Hallucinations are another problem in schizophrenia patients. According to a research, up to 4% of people hear voices but that doesn't pose a problem for them. In the case of sick persons this is an entirely different thing: they may hear voices or sounds that other people don't, this voices being sometimes familiar, friendly or critical. In the case of people diagnosed with schizophrenia the most common hallucinations are critical or unfriendly voices. This voices may have been in their mind all their life, but they have been triggered to be more aggressive by a particular event.

The delusions are the experiences or beliefs that the patient has regarding facts that don't exist.

The negative symptoms are named so because they are not noticed as easily as other signs of the illness. They might be such signs as being withdrawn, apathetic, and unable to concentrate. It is all so often that patient shows either a very chaotic behavior, much depending on people's response towards them, or a very mellow way of being sitting in a certain spot and not moving for hours. Because of this kind of actions people tend to discriminate and ignore other persons with mental problems, making them fell depressed and isolated.

As much as one in every hundred people is diagnosed with suffering of schizophrenia usually between the ages of 20 and 30. The number of men and women found with the illness is roughly the same, but the age of men tends to be smaller at the time when they are diagnosed.

Diagnosing schizophrenia is quite tricky sometimes, and that is why a second opinion should always be looked after to be shore no mistakes have been made.

Alzheimer's Disease - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Alzheimer's disease

Definition

It is a condition that permanently affects the brain. It is a group of brain diseases that lead to the loss of mental and physical functions. Only 5 to 6 percent of older people are afflicted by Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia but this means approximately 3 to 4 million Americans have one of these debilitating disorders. Approximately 10% of all people over the age of 65 and as many as 50% of those over the age of 85 are diagnosed with the condition. Because women tend to live longer than men, more women are affected by AD than men. Furthermore, 80% of caregivers are women, so they are also secondarily affected by the disease.

Causes

The causes of Alzheimer's disease are not yet fully understood. There probably is not one single cause, but several factors that affect each person differently. Your risk of developing Alzheimer's appears to be slightly higher if a first-degree relative parent, sister or brother has the disease.

The loss of estrogen production, the lack of a formal education, and severe head trauma resulting in unconsciousness and retrograde amnesia may be risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

Symptoms

The first sign of Alzheimer disease is a continuous pattern of forgetting things like trouble to remembering recent events, activities, or the names of familiar people or things. They may not be able to solve simple math problems. This starts to affect a person's daily life. Symptoms of the disease include memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, personality changes, disorientation, and loss of language skills. Always fatal, Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of irreversible dementia.

Other symptoms can include:

* Lack of concentration
* Confusion about time and place
* Self-neglect
* Restlessness
* A tendency to wander aimlessly
* Sometimes saying or doing outrageous things
* Mood can be depressed, anxious or agitated
* Reasoning can be come slow and muddled
* Some people may experience hallucinations or delusions

Treatment

Some health professionals try to encourage patients to reminisce about past memories as a way to reduce depression without the use of drugs. Donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), and galantamine (Reminyl) may keep some symptoms from becoming worse for a limited time. A doctor may prescribe drugs such as tranquilizers to reduce agitation, anxiety and unpredictable behavior. On average, AD patients live from 8 to 10 years after they are diagnosed, though some people may live with AD for as many as 20 years.

Vitamin E slows the progress of some consequences of Alzheimer's for about 7 months, and scientists are investigating whether ginkgo biloba can delay or prevent dementia in older people, and if estrogen can prevent Aalzheimer's in women with a family history of the disease.

Chances of developing schizophrenia are about 1%. Risks are even higher if someone in the family has or had the disease since the illness tends to run in the family. Studies have shown that risks vary considerably depending on who in the family has it. There is no difference between the risks men or women are facing when dealing with the danger of getting the disease.

Although the big majority of people developing the illness has passed a certain age ( 20 or even older), very rare cases have been seen where children as young as 5 years old have been diagnosed with the disease. Symptoms didn't usually appear until adulthood but as said earlier they have been present and found in children.

If at any time a person thinks that symptoms similar to those of schizophrenia are appearing in his or her behavior, getting and consulting a doctor would be a very wise and good decision. Detecting the disease very early in its developing is very important, this way the treatment having the biggest chances of having a good result.

Risks in people with the disease that would want to have a family, and of course children, will always be there, but this doesn't really mean that one shouldn't try. If the need to do so is really big there are some facts that should be considered. Problems like nursing and providing for the child or children, containing the symptoms and outbreaks of the disease, the children being born with the disease and even the possible help that your partner could give are always there and should be taken in consideration.

It is very important for people with schizophrenia to fell cherished, loved and appreciated as a normal person will be in the day to day life. They are very much normal people, like us, sometimes with very high IQ's actually, and unless the symptoms show a higher chance of acting up, the person is just as normal in behavior as us. The right and best thing to do as a friend, would be to understand as much as you could possibly do and also try to educate other in order to have a better response and attitude towards people suffering from this terrible illness. Being supportive and understanding the experiences that patient go through means a lot to them.

Although some symptoms may be similar to those of someone who is on drugs, schizophrenia can't be caused by taking street drugs like cocaine or other hallucinogenic drugs.

A higher risk of developing the disease is in the case of heavy drinkers. People on medication should be particularly careful when mixing them with alcohol. Effects can be very wide and dangerous.

The impact schizophrenia has on families

It seems that the most affected of schizophrenia is the family and not the ill person. Families are seeking answers why their child has got ill, what might he have done do deserve the affection. Family members will try to stick together but eventually they will be torn apart by any crisis situations raised by the schizophrenic person.

Finding out that your child is schizophrenic is not easy to bearable. All kinds of feelings will appear from rage to sorrow, anxiety and guilt. People do not understand why that had to happen to them and will try to find an answer. Passing through all these feelings is a stage in accepting what had happened to the ill person.

Because they are in shock, some people might deny all they hear from the doctor and will refuse to accept the most obvious thing that their child is not well at all.

Some might be angry on the ill person and will refuse to pay any attention to the sick child. They can even end up wishing that the child would have never existed. Others will blame each other for the fact that their child is ill, they will think that they have not been good enough parents.

All these terrible feelings are just a part from the natural process of accommodation, from the stage that leads to soul healing and acceptance of the reality. But sometimes these manifestations continue to be present for a longer time than it should normally be and physical damage might install, like loss of weight, insomnia, even alcohol addiction.

Parents often ask themselves questions about how the future will be for the ill person, about who will take care of their child after they will no longer be able. These thoughts can bring on serious depressions and intense stress to the family.

Other children from the family might be terrified about the fact that they will have to continue their parents work with the ill person; they do not want to live their lives like their parents did, in a continuous search for answers and disillusions. They will eventually have to either sacrifice their lives in order to personally take care of their sister or brother or to live with a permanent feeling of guilt if they refuse to do that and give their relative in care to a hospital.

Having to take care of a schizophrenic person is not that easy as some might think and it needs a lot of time and most of all, patience, which not everybody has.

Advices for helping schizophrenics

It is good to know that only a third of the people that develop schizophrenia are going to live with it for the rest of their life. Another third will surely recover, while the rest of the cases are going to experience occasional episodes.

As a schizophrenic, people should avoid too much stress. Employers are already developing different adjustments to the schedule in order to help people with mental problems such as schizophrenics to rehabilitate.

For treating schizophrenia, people try different therapies. Relaxing therapies are most frequently used to help schizophrenics step over their problems. A healthy life should also help. This life style should have a benefic effect over patients. It is necessary to include eating well, enough exercise and sleep and less stress.

One of the most asked questions is if people with schizophrenia are dangerous. Media presents us many cases where schizophrenics are seen like dangerous persons with duplicate personality. They also show us that schizophrenics need to be kept in institutions and that without drugs they are very dangerous. These affirmations are not real. Studies say that the chances for a schizophrenic to kill somebody are very low. Their problem is hearing voices. People who are afraid of them need to think again. Schizophrenics are having problems especially with themselves because the voices they hear tell them to commit suicide not to kill someone else. That is why every day in a schizophrenic's life is a fight for staying alive.

Partners, families or friends have a very important mission for the patients. Schizophrenics want what any one wants: affection. They are not allowed to feel alone and in every moment is recommended for them to talk to somebody. That is why the close friends or the families should try to find out more about schizophrenia including coping strategies to encourage the patients. A permanent discussion with these patients is one of the most useful things that a friend or a family member should do for them.

It is rather strange for people who are not suffering from schizophrenia to agree to its patients, but denial or even approval of their telling is not benefic for them. The solution should mean to agree to what they say but to expose your opinion after they are done with the explanations. Psychological support is also recommended, because specialist can work different with the patients. Their experience might help the schizophrenics to rehabilitate.

If the family or friends believe that there is a high risk of harming itself, the person with schizophrenia needs to be hospitalized.

"Who's On Top?" - 10 methods to take control (time management, record tracking, goal setting)

At first glance, it would seem that Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and positive thinking have absolutely nothing at all to do with one another. But many of us who have Attention Deficity Disorder develop negative patterns of thought due to the fact that we begin to be frustrated by the challenges and many times a feeling of being completely overwhelmed. This very negativemanner of seeing the world then makes it even more difficult for any one of us to manage those challenges we are forced to face and move ahead.

Doing positive thinking allows people with ADD to focus on strengths and achievements, which increases motivation and happiness. This, in turn, allows a person to spend more time making progress, and considerably less time feeling stuck and down. The tips that follow provide very
practical suggestions that you can use to help youmove into more positive patterns of thinking:

1. Don't Forget to Take Good Care of Yourself

It's a great deal easier to be positive when you are exercising, eating well, and getting enough rest.

2. Remind Yourself of the Things You Are Grateful For

Challenges and stresses don't seem nearly as bad when you arerepeatedly reminding yourself of those things that are right in life. Taking just a minute every day to stop and have a good appreciation of the good things will make abig difference.

3. Look for the Proof, Don't Make Assumptions

A fear of not being liked or accepted sometimes leads us to assume that we know what others are possiblythinking, but our fears are usually not well founded. If you have a fear that a friend or family member's bad mood is due to something you did, or that your co-workers are secretly gossiping about you behind your back, speak up and ask them about it. Don't waste any time worrying that you did anything wrong unless you can come up with some proof that there is something to worry about.

4. Stay Away from Using Absolutes

Have you ever told anyone "You're ALWAYS late!" or complained to a loved one "You NEVER call me!"? Thinking or speaking in absolutes such as 'always' and 'never' makes things seem worse than they are, and puts programming into your brain so that you believe that certain people are incapable of delivering.

5. Refrain From Negative Thoughts

Thoughts you have can't achieve any power over you if you don't permit them. Should you notice yourself putting forth a negative thought, make sure you detach yourself from it, bear witness to it, and don't follow it.

6. Stomp on the "ANTS"

In his fascinating book "Change Your Brain, Change Your Life," Dr. Daniel Amen tells about "ANTs" - Automatic Negative Thoughts. These are the bad thoughts that are usually reactionary, such as "these people are laughing, it's a good bet they are talking about me," or "You say the boss wants to see me? It must be something bad!" When you recognize thoughts such as these, realize that they are nothing more than ANTs and crush them!

7. Practice Squeezin', Lovin' and Touchin' (Your Friends and Family)

There's no requirement for you to be an expert to have an understanding of the benefits of a nice hug. Having positive physical contact with friends, loved ones, and even pets, gives you an immediate pick-me-up. One research project on this particular subject had a waitress touching some of her customers' arms as she handed them their checks. The tips she got from these customers were higher than from those customers she didn't touch!

8. Raise Your Level of Social Activity

By getting involved in more social activity, you reduce loneliness. Make sure you surround yourself with happy, healthy people, and their positive energy will have a very positive effect on you!

9. Try Helping Another Person, or Volunteering for an Organization

Everyone feels good after helping. You can volunteer your resources, your time, or your money. The more positive energy you put out into the world, the more you will benefit from in return.

10. Use Thought Pattern Interrupst to Combat Rumination

If you catch yourself ruminating, the best way of stopping it is to interrupt the pattern and make yourself do something that is completely different. What rumination amounts to is hyper-focus on something negative. Rumination's never productive, because it's not solution-oriented or rational, it only represents extreme worry. You can deal with it by trying to change your physical environment - sit outside or take a walk. You could also call a friend, turn on some music, or pick up a book.

When you think of the corporate world, protocol is pretty much practiced like a religion. Knowing the things to do represents the basic fundamentals of productivity, but interaction and having a steady mind makes up the entire thing to allow true productivity. There are some who appear to work well even if under pressure, but they are not common ones and we are just human and imperfect. If we permit these little things like stress under our skins, it won't solve our problems. Sometimes it takes a bit of courage to confess to the fact that we're well on our way to turning into workaholics than tell ourselves that we aren't doing our best.

PDD And APD: What Is Developmental Delay?

Developmental Disability includes Autism, Asperger's, Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified and other diagnoses. Developmental Delay includes ADD, LD, Dyslexia, and others. Then there is Global Developmental Disorder and Central Auditory Processing Disorder, and I don't know where they fit in the official structure of diagnostic labels, but I know they are a developmental difficulty.

I have been working with children with developmental difficulties for years. I use the terms developmental difficulties to encompass everything from Developmental Disability to Developmental Delay, and even more. In our consulting program we consider them all fundamentally the same. They differ only by degrees. We have developed protocols which work with all of the developmental difficulties. Our program awakens the child's unrealized keys for becoming age-appropriate.

What is the magnitude of this problem?

All of these developmental difficulties add up to about 28 million children in the USA. The Census Bureau calculates there a total of 85 million children in the USA. The APA (American Pediatric Association) reports that one in every six children have a diagnosis for some developmental difficulty (16.7%). The different associations for all of the individual diagnostic labels of developmental difficulties all agree when they report that about 50% of the children with these problems obtain a diagnosis for their problem (for a total of 33%). And, 33% of 85 million is 28 million children.

That means that 33% of all the children in every class have some level of developmental difficulty. Maybe it shows up as an inability to focus or sit still. Maybe it shows up as an inability to learn reading. Maybe it shows up as an inability to kick a ball. Maybe it is so intensive, the children never learn to connect to other people. Maybe it is mild and only an annoyance to the child and the parents.

In whatever level of intensity, developmental difficulties seem to be growing in percentages. We are obviously getting better with our diagnoses. And, we are obviously advanced as a culture so that we offer those testing services to more families who otherwise could not afford it. But, I am not sure this is the reason we have 1/3 of our children with developmental difficulties.

When I was a child in school, many years ago, I do not remember 1/3 of the children having these types of difficulties in my classrooms. I remember that maybe 5% to 10% could have had these kinds of difficulties, but certainly not 1/3.

What is a developmental difficulty?

Quite simply, it is some blockage in the developmental process. All living things have a life cycle. Much of the initial phases of that life cycle are spent in developing. From inception to maturity, all living things progress through a series of milestones. For us humans, we call them our developmental milestones.

For those with developmental difficulties, they do not progress through their milestones appropriately. They get blocked at some of the milestones. They skip some milestones. So, many of the basic learning processes needed for appropriate maturity, are lost. And, in some cases a child is held in a stage and does not pass out of it on to the next developmental stage.

I think that all of the unique diagnostic labels are related to some basic factors. In which developmental milestones did the child get blocked or which milestones did the child skip? How intense is the 'stuckness?' And, how many milestones did the child skip?

What can be done about it?

All of the different diagnostic category associations in the field of developmental difficulties are clearly speaking on one voice when they say that the 1) developmental process is blocked and that 2) there is no cure.

Researchers in this field do not know what to do to cure developmental difficulties. Nothing that they try affects the developmental process. For decades clinicians have tried everything they can think of to do and nothing works.

After all these frustrating years, they have finally agreed with each other that there is no cure. And, now it is official. All of the diagnostic associations and all of the groups creating the diagnostic definitions agree that there is no cure. Now, they invest all of their research dollars on finding causes instead of developing fixes for 28 million children with these developmental difficulties.

They have tried many things, but they have not tried everything.

With our work the children round out the chinks in their movement through the developmental steps. Our program awakens the child's unrealized keys for becoming age-appropriate.

5 Tips to Cure and Prevent Anxiety & Panic Attacks

Having a panic attack puts a person in the most vulnerable and fearful state they've ever been in. Without knowing a way to deal with it someone may be in a panic for hours. Here are 5 simple ways to deal with and prevent panic attacks

1. Get distracted - The worst place to be during a panic attack is in your head. Shifting one's focus from the inside to the outside world frees you from the feedback loop of negative thoughts that comes during an attack. Some ways to do this are -
a. One immediate way is to put all your attention on a sound in the environment. If possible it may help to sit down and close your eyes.
b. Get one of your favorite songs stuck in your head, maybe even sing some
c. Go for a walk somewhere peaceful. Bringing some relaxing music along will help
d. Watch some TV, comedy
e. Read a book

2. Give yourself a break - The best way to prevent a panic attack is to lower the level of stress in your life. If you feel overwhelmed by work, school, or even life in general be sure to take breaks from the busyness. Consider lowering your workload or taking a holiday for yourself.

3. Breathe from your diaphragm - During a panic attack breath becomes shorter, quicker, and gets trapped in the chest. The need for air becomes greater during this time due to the physical stress on the body. Breathing from the diaphragm instead of the chest allows you to take in much deeper breaths. This is as simple as letting the breath sink into your belly. Place one hand on your stomach and one on your chest - you'll be breathing from your diaphragm when your stomach rises and your chest and shoulders stay put.

+ Another great way to control you heart rate through breath is breathing in quickly and releasing it slowly. As we breathe in our heart rate and blood pressure rises, and as we breathe out it lowers. By increasing the time breathing out your heart rate and blood pressure will lower. Continue this until you feel more calm and relaxed

4. Face your fear - If your panic attack is coming from a phobia or irrational thought pattern the only way to truly get rid of it is to face it. Ask questions about where this fear or thought comes from and if it's really logical or not. Take it apart piece by piece with rational questions and create new, positive thought patterns.

5. Talk to someone- If things aren't working on your own there's no shame in going to someone else for help. Being able to open up and talk to another person without feeling judged is very healing. Try talking to a few different therapists and find the right one for you.

These 5 tips have helped me get past my panic immensely. My last advice is to not give your anxiety more power than yourself - you are in control and you alone have the power to change.

Combating Anxiety: The Alternative Way

Anxiety has many signs and symptoms and they might include copious perspiration and a nauseating feeling when required to orate or be examined. Parallel to the aggregate of causes a legion of therapy is on hand for the plagued. Alternative medicine is another option for those who do not appreciate the notion of drug dispensation.

According to statistics, approximately seven percent of Americans endure anxiety and panic illnesses. The common way to relieve such disorders is prescribing medication which if taken for a long time can be harmful. Examples of some renowned anxiety pills are Diazepam and Wellbutrin.

There has been an upsurge in the number of Americans resorting to complementary medicines in a bid to calm their solicitous emotions. Over the past ten years, the request for complementary cures has soared to 300%. This is, to some degree, due to the lack of unpleasant ramifications which are connected with regulation medicine. Notwithstanding that organic cures are not supposed to be utilized over long periods but soothe the illness in the short period of time that they are employed.

An intense analysis of the natural remedy that you are considering to use is mandatory. It is also obligatory to make an appointment with your family doctor to discuss the medical assurance of the organic remedy which you want to administer.

St Johns Wort is a very common example of herbs used to combat anxious feelings. If it is used for just two weeks it provides a change in the degree of anxiety. However, this is just one of the leading cures. There are many others available on the retail market.

You might also opt to attempt using Valerian Root. Mainly it assists in battling against the chronic inability to fall asleep by having a tranquilizing effect. This means that the central nervous system is knocked out cold. Investigations show that Valerian Root is efficient in upgrading sleep 90 percent of the time. This is relevant to anxiety because a major cause of anxiety is insomnia.

Vitamins can also provide an effective treatment for anxiety. They can be quite important in enabling synthesis and maintenance of neurotransmitters. For instance, B-complex can help produce neurochemicals, which in turn assists in the synthesis of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.

Yet another aid to combating anxiety is Passion Flower. It helps to calm the central nervous system, leading to feelings of peace. Meanwhile, Ashwaghanda Root can make you feel stronger so that you are better able to handle the effects of anxiety.

Kava Kava is possibly an entity of the best anxiety combatants currently in the world. Extensive examination done on Kava Kava has disclosed that it is very efficient in battling against the signs of anxiety. It has also been dubbed a highly secure remedy to swallow, increasing its level of recognition and making it a famous option.

In order to deal with comprehensive jittery emotions and concern, PureCalm is being retailed as the hassle-free remedy. A driblet is all that one needs in order to feel calm and unrestrained. Take note that for greater levels of anxiety and panic attacks, the best option is MindSoothe (a fusion of St Johns Wort and Passiflora). The latter is the cause of congenial sleep, better attentiveness and reminiscence. Due to the aforementioned traits exhibited by MindSoothe it is utilized in the regimen to cure anxiety.

Do you sometimes experience various thoughts that spin in your mind unruly? Is your heart rate so fast that it could be going at a hundred miles in a second? Do you have immense difficulty when trying to concentrate? Having anxious feeling is part and particle of humanity but if you answered yes to any of the above questions then you may be in dire need of medical attention. Organic medicines are the alternative way of dealing with anxiety and they are recommended to anti-prescription sufferers. The important fact to contemplate is that medication has its flaws and it is up to you, as the consumer, to decide which type of organic medicine you will administer. The easiest way to select medication is undoubtedly extensive investigations.

Are Some People More Prone To Panic Disorder Than Others

Are some people more prone to panic disorder than others? Yes. Physical differences have been observed among people who are prone to panic attacks or develop panic disorders. The following are descriptions of these physical differences.

1) Sensitivity to adrenalin and hormonal changes

In general, people with panic disorders including agoraphobia have overactive adrenal glands and are more likely to experience an adrenaline rush or "fight or flight" response when faced with a perceived psychological threat. This makes them more susceptible to panic attacks.

In panic disorder patients, adrenaline and a hormone called cortisol (a stress fighting hormone) are overproduced by the adrenal gland during times of prolonged stress.

The overproduction of adrenaline and cortisol interferes with the production of serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin and dopamine are neurotransmitters that stabilize your mood and sense of well-being. When serotonin and dopamine levels are low, your mood becomes unstable and you are less able to cope with stress.

In this state of chemical imbalance, you become more easily fatigued, your immune system is compromised, and you are more at risk for experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. Even after the original stressor is gone, you are likely to stay in a heightened state of anxiety.

2) Sensitivity to medications

A greater sensitivity to medications, including side effects, is observed among panic disorder patients. As mentioned previously, the side effects and/or withdrawal symptoms for some medications, including anti-anxiety medications, mimic the symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks. Because of this, medications prescribed to people who have panic attacks or panic disorder should be prescribed in smaller doses at first and then increased gradually as it is possible.

3) Sensitivity to physical stimulus

People who have panic attacks usually have a heightened sensitivity to bright lights, temperatures, sudden or harsh sounds, and other sources of physical stimulation. Physical stimulus will more easily overwhelm someone with panic disorder, create an aura of disorientation, and lead to a release of adrenaline (triggering the "fight or flight" response).

4) Sensitivity to large amounts of sodium lactate

Large amounts of sodium lactate in the bloodstream have been found by some researchers to cause panic attacks in people with panic disorder. Sodium lactate is produced when muscle cells convert sugar into energy. It is the basic solution in intravenous fluids given in the hospital.

In one study, panic disorder patients experienced a dramatic increase in blood flow to the temporal lobes of the brain when given sodium lactate. The temporal lobes are the same area of the brain affected when subjects in other studies (who do not have panic disorder) are given an electric shock!

Depression is a serious medical illness that involves the brain. It's more than just a feeling of being "down in the dumps" or "blue" for a few days. If you are one of the more than 20 million people in the United States who have depression, the feelings do not go away. Depression can occur for what seems like no reason at all or can be triggered by a traumatizing life event within a person's life. The cause of depression still remains a mystery among the medicinal world, however many experts say genes may have an effect on the likelihood of depression within a family and a lack of the chemical serotonin in the brain may be linked to depression. Just like all other medical conditions depression has a series of symptoms that can be diagnosed and treated by a medical professional and can be defined as a never ending sad mood or affect as well as a loss of interest in life and life's activities. Although a low mood or state of dejection that does not affect functioning is often colloquially referred to as depression , clinical depression is a clinical diagnosis and may be different from the everyday meaning of "being depressed." Many people identify the feeling of being clinically depressed as "feeling sad for no reason", or "having no motivation to do anything." One suffering from depression may feel tired, sad, irritable, lazy, unmotivated, and apathetic. Clinical depression is generally acknowledged to be more serious than normal depressed feelings. It often leads to constant negative thinking and sometimes substance abuse . Extreme depression can culminate in its sufferers attempting or committing suicide . Without careful assessment, delirium can easily be confused with depression and a number of other psychiatric disorders because many of the signs and symptoms are conditions present in depression , as well as other mental illnesses including dementia and psychosis .

Depression may be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps. Sometimes this is because of a loss, or a change. The feeling of sadness, though, is appropriate and transitory. When such feelings persist and impair daily life, they may signal an underlying depressive illness. So it is the severity and duration of symptoms, plus the presence of other features, that help distinguish this normal sadness from a depressive disorder. Depression is more than just a mood disorder, it is a real illness that not only affects one's mood and thoughts but also appetite, sleep patterns and one's self esteem. It may also involve physical symptoms, such as stomach pains, headaches and rapid heartbeat. There are several different types of depression, so you will hear terms like major depression, endogenous depression, chronic depression, and so on. These terms tend to describe the predominant symptoms, their severity or their duration.

Causes of Depression

Depression may be triggered by stressful life events, other illnesses, certain drugs or medications, or inherited traits. Although causes of depression are not entirely understood, we know it is linked to an imbalance in brain chemistry. Once the imbalance is corrected, symptoms of depression generally improve. Some researchers feel that severe depressions are caused by a physical defect in the body, such as a biochemical imbalance in the brain or other factors. Other things that have been linked to depression have to do with a person's lifestyle. Things such as; food allergies, prescription drugs, caffeine, alcohol, illicit drugs and even tobacco. If a person has some sort of health problem such as; cancer, aids, hepatitis, diabetes, hypoglycemia, chronic pain, hormonal (glandular) disorders such as those of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands; malignancies, anemias or other blood problems, or even somethings like nutritional deficiencies, heredity and bad childhood experiences can cause depression.

Symptoms of Depression

1. Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping.

2. Change in weight.

3. Feelings of worthlessness.

4. Loss of identity.

5. Lack of concentration.

6. Feelings of anxiety.

Treatment of Depression

There are many treatments available for depression, including counselling and medicines, but the first step is always to get a physical and psychological assessment to find out whether you have a depressive illness. Anti-depressant medications are often used. There are different types and the doctor will recommend which is the right one under the particular circumstances.

Maybe your heart races when you sit for an examination and whenever you have to make a public speech you sweat profusely. Well, as varied as the causes are there are equally the same amounts of regimens to treat your anxiety. To beat the notion of ingesting tablets or medicine, there is a disparate method to cure your ailment.

According to statistics, approximately seven percent of Americans endure anxiety and panic illnesses. The common way to relieve such disorders is prescribing medication which if taken for a long time can be harmful. Examples of some renowned anxiety pills are Diazepam and Wellbutrin.

The main disadvantage associated with conventional cures or prescription medicine is the side-effects. This has thus caused the amount of Americans relying on alternative medicine to sharply proliferate to an astounding 300 percent in only ten years. Nonetheless organic cures also have their shortcomings. The main one being that they are only used to soothe the ailment temporarily.

As it is with all medication. It would be advisable to talk with to your physician in order to gain the green flag to use the alternative medicine. It would also be benignant to thoroughly investigate on the amounts and types of components that make up the natural remedy.

A number of herbs offer relief from the symptoms of anxiety. For instance, St. Johns Wort is one of the most popular anti-anxiety herbs on the market. After taking St. Johns Wort for as little as two weeks, you should notice a difference in your anxiety level.

Valerian Root is another alternative option you might try. It is especially helpful in combating insomnia because of its sedative quality. In other words, it helps to lull the central nervous system to sleep. Research indicates that Valerian Root is effective in improving sleep 90 percent of the time. This is important, since much of anxiety is linked to sleep disorders.

Vitamins also play an important role in efficiently combating anxiety. They permit formation and alimony of neurotransmitters. For example, B-complex can aid in the creation of neurochemicls, which also help in the making of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.

Furthermore, Passion Flower offers an alternative cure. It helps to tame the central nervous system, producing tranquil nerves. Ashwaghanda Root increases your level of tolerance so that you are better equipped to deal with the consequences of anxiety.

But perhaps no herbal remedy is quite as effective as Kava Kava. This is considered to be one of the strongest anti-anxiety remedies in the world. A number of studies indicates that Kava Kava is highly effective in relieving the short-term symptoms of anxiety. It is also considered quite safe to ingest, making it one of the most popular herbs available on the market today.

An herbal remedy called PureCalm is being marketed as a safe way to deal with general nervousness and worry. You may feel relaxed after taking only a few drops of this natural substance. However, if you suffer from severe anxiety, including panic attacks, you might consider a remedy called MindSoothe, which combines St. Johns Wort with Passiflora. Mindsoothe has been linked to good sleep, greater concentration, and better memory. Therefore, it is particularly effective in treating the symptoms of anxiety.

We all have feelings of anxiety from time to time. But how can you tell if your anxiety is out of control? If you experience racing thoughts, rapid heartbeat, extreme difficulty resting or concentrating, you probably need to get help. If you do not like dealing with the side-effects of prescription drugs, an herbal remedy may be in order. You should know in advance, however, that some herbal remedies carry their own risks and lead to significant side-effects. The more you know about herbal remedies, the better consumer you'll be. Don't allow yourself to be a human guinea pig. Take herbal medication only after you have thoroughly studied its effects upon the human body.
